Adapt or Die In the latest of a number of recent reports highlighting the UK’s unpreparedness for climate change, the Environment Agency has released its third adaptation report to Defra under the Adaptation Reporting Power (Guardian item here). Urging world leaders to take the issue seriously at COP26, the report outlines the changes in sea level rise, temperature, and precipitation projected for the UK during this century and sets out five “reality checks” to make the case for urgent action. These include the need for stronger community resilience; a strategic approach to water supply management; adequate regulation, policy, and legislation; making nature the foundation of development; and recognition of the increased burden on emergency response.
Six ways for civil engineers to act on climate change The Institution of Civil Engineers has released its State of the Nation 2021 report, which assesses the current state of the UK’s infrastructure and its readiness to act on climate change adaptation and mitigation. It emphasizes the need to plan, design, and operate flexibly in an uncertain future and take a systems approach to ensuring the resilience of interconnected assets.
Resilient London: Confronting climate change New London Architecture launched this report in October reviewing the status of climate resilience strategies and actions plans across the capital, the ability of the built environment industry to build and design for a changing climate, and the barriers to implementing effective resilience approaches in the capital. It also showcases projects from London and further afield that exemplify good practice in sustainable environmental approaches that consider climate resilience.
